Ciscomani family

Giovanni Cismaconi

1869-1951 · Zoppola, Italy · Hermosillo, Mexico

Biography

Father of Herminio and Tomás, born around 1869, son of Tomaso, and a farmer in Zoppola, where the birth registers of 1899 and 1902 write the family name Cismaconi and he signed it that way himself. He married Luigia Cecco in Zoppola in 1896, as the town's ten-year marriage index shows. In 1907 he sailed from Naples on the Lazio with some twenty Zoppola men bound for Madera, California; that passenger list already spells him Ciscomani.

The 1910 census finds him working in Lemoore, Kings County. In 1913 he crossed again with his son Tommaso, 15, heading to a friend in Tulare. He was back in Zoppola in 1920, when he paid Erminio's passage. He later joined his sons in Sonora and died at home in Hermosillo on 15 January 1951, aged 82, of old age, still an Italian national and recorded as a farmer; Luigia survived him.

  • Family account of the name Erminio Cismaconi

Shared with the site by a great-grandson of Herminio on 18 October 2026: Herminio's original name was Erminio Cismaconi, his father was Giovanni Cismaconi, and Erminio became Herminio on arriving at Ellis Island around 1907. The same day the Cismaconi spelling was found in the Zoppola birth registers of 1899 and 1902.

The entry pairs 'Cismaconi Giovanni' with 'Cecco Luigia', year 1896, act 21 (the act number could also read 28). The 1896 marriage register itself was not found on film 008622762, and the 1896 banns register (acts 3-22) has no entry for the couple, so the act should be requested from the Comune di Zoppola.
